About the Authors
Understanding CATS & CARS
Phillip completed his CPL at Lanseria Flight Centre in 1993. In 1998 he started his aviation career as an instructor at 43 Air School. During his 2 years there, he went on to complete his Grade 2 instructors rating and ATPL and was involved in the initial training for new 43 Air School instructors.
In 1999 he joined Rossair Contracts and was promoted through the ranks until becoming the Chief Training Captain. He led Rossair’s implementation of airline-standard multi-crew concepts and became a designated examiner in 2003.
In 2003 he joined South African Airways where he has been flying ever since. For a few years in his spare time, Phillip acted as Chief Flying Instructor at 43 Air School Advanced Training (Lanseria) improving the training given to the next generation of pilots.
Understanding the Jeppesen
In 1996 Jacques completed his CPL at NAC Lanseria in between his studies at the University of the Witwatersrand. In 1998 he graduated as an Aeronautical Engineer and shortly afterwards started working for 43 Air School. He spent the next 18 months as a full time instructor, completing his ATPL and Grade 2 flight instructors rating. In 2000 he joined Rossair Contracts and was promoted to Training Captain on Kingair B200 and B1900 aircraft.
When the time came to complete his thesis for the Grade 1 Instructors rating, the natural product was the first version of Understanding the Jeppesen (Original title: The South African Pilot’s Guide to the Jeppesen Airway Manual). Jacques was designated as a Flight Examiner by the SACAA in 2003. In 2004 he was appointed as Chief Training Captain at NAC Charter. In addition to his normal responsibilities, he flew and instructed on Premier 1 jets. Thereafter, he spent 2 years at Comair flying the B737 before joining Cathay Pacific Airways in 2007.
Jacques now pursues his passion for training by producing high quality pilot training books.
